I just ask why? I did when in a group of people, and the person next to me was quite relieved I did. She works for the NHS and is a union member. The others were taken aback, and their rhetoric cooled considerably.

my own experience of trade unions was that it was weak and inept, from my point of view it achieved nothing and cost me money in the process. probably great if your lucky enough to have a strong one but a waste of time and money on a factory floor.

Have you ever tried to explain such things to someone not British? Also try: We don't agree with human rights. We had to ask Europe for an opt-out from the minimum wage. Taxes should be low, whatever the effect. We pay nurses less than ten years ago. The Daily Mail has to approve all policies etcetc

Broadly union membership declined as employment rights increased, then it increased when the corrupt took back power and were openly shafting workers. Where I don't like unions is where a rep puts the union policy ahead of the worker they're meant to be supporting eg in a disciplinary

They focus on small elements of what unions have done that may inconvenience them (eg train driver strikes) instead of the bigger picture of what unions have achieved - maternity pay, sick pay, maximum working hours, health and safety legislation, redundancy pay, etc. I find it very self centered

It's an old feeling, revived. Post war hostility towards unions in the UK arguably reached its most strongest in the 'winter of discontent' which led to the downfall of Callaghan and Thatcher's rise to power. And now all those old arguments are getting dusted down.
