we need a nebula for transsexuals who can't afford talent agents. a means tv with wider doors and 200% better marketing. a vimeo that doesn't charge you hundreds of dollars if your video gets viewed too many times. a youtube... that *isn't* for nazis....... dream big
means tv seemed so promising and my whole relationship to it at this point is just giving them money each month as a tithe and never looking at the website :/
tbh i often think about like. how the people of the czech republic all collectively own the budweiser budvar brewery and its profits directly benefit the national economy and public infrastructure projects and social services.
and like... what if america built a youtube that did that
the central intractable problem here is that streaming video is crazy expensive to maintain and basically impossible to turn a profit from without the world's scummiest business practices. you can't really capitalist competition your way into an alternative. we gotta nationalize that shit, baby!
My understanding is that even YouTube does not profit from it. It simply runs at a loss to suppress competition and allow Google to control narratives.
we do have peertube, though it doesn't have as many people on it as i wish it did, and there's still problems caused by instances staying on older versions
i use newpipe to get videos from em and some are entirely inaccessible cause the app can't parse older versions of the platform
There was a period where serious work was being put into making video cheap to steam using P2P technology, but then CDNs got *really* cheap and that work kind of withered. Then it turned out CDNs had only been cheap around 2010 because cloud providers were lowballing prices to grow a market. Oops!
i bet there would be a fun way to set something like that up using private tracker structures these days. apparently the kids are doing a thing called debridding?

another case of 'giant fucker eating up competition so it can bloat and die'
Ideally something that's cooperative.
