It looks to me like he’s using both the tariffs and the deportations as a way to extort from whatever industries he thinks he can get money from. Classic mob stuff. “Sure is a nice meatpacking plant you have there. Would be a shame of something happened to it.”

I think 1 of 2 things. 1 It’s ripe for potential corruption. Favored actors get tariff exceptions. Those that find a way to funnel him money get tariff exceptions. 2. He may just truly think it’s other counties that have to pay for with no impact to US consumers. I think it’s mostly the former.

Tariffs are the easiest form of corruption.Only the President can make exemptions. For example, last term he threw tariffs on booze coming from France, then made a exemption for Champagne because LVMH (Arnault family) owns the vast majority of champagne.Arnault fam was at the inauguration.Big donors

My take is it forces every company with clout to have to give him a tithe to bypass tariffs. The small companies? Who cares they can burn out they don’t matter when he can get a couple billion dollar kickback from Apple for letting them bypass TSMC/Foxconn tariffs.

back in trump 1.0 Apple managed to get Trump to let them bypass a bunch of the trade bullshit because they made a single computer model that barely sold(Mac Pro) in the US. He can say “look at this apple is bringing jobs back to the US” while they give him in kind donations to avoid his wrath.
