Right if Matthew Yglesias is using it ffs. Not that I think highly of him at all but he's held up as some kind of liberal and he's a professional journalist who's over the age of 12.
We need to remove popular opinions about fascists being “liberal”. We need to call them out. No passes are given to people who help destroy lives. They’re awful and need to be stopped.
But, your point is valid. Popular attitude and all.
He's rendered Congress inert. Now he's going after the courts, guys. ICE Raids every day. Elon closing and/or threatening another government department. Daily threats upon allied countries. Don't be retarded.
Consensus only changes if people let it. If people use that slur, it's our job to inform them that it's unacceptable, and to treat them accordingly if they continue.
Never surrender. Make assholes fight for every inch of ground. They'll get tired eventually, cause they don't really care.
It fucking blows. I’m not afraid to use my husband’s stage 3A metastatic cancer as a weapon against them, because if I say that I’m the one at risk of dying, they say “good”, right to my face. They’re usually much nicer about cancer, for some reason.
Non-disabled people who are generally rich in privilege have absolutely no idea what it's like for strangers to wish death on you for existing while disabled, do they.
I haven't, no. But isn't trying to stop people from saying slurs and telling people to wear masks good regardless of context?
I hope my last post didn't come off as implying it's a moral failing if you can't, just intended that we shouldn't approach social standards with a defeatist attitude.
Chances are good you'll get a barrage of abuse if you ask people to stop using a minor slur. There is absolutely no point with a major one. They are using it specifically because they hate disabled people. Report and block.
I can't help feeling that if you were used to doing this, you'd know that.
Absolutely! And that's disgusting, yeah. When it comes to social media, I 100% block and report and move on.
I guess I was more thinking of social situations in which there's a degree of control-- like, in close knit online communities or extended friend groups.
it's long been popular on the internet, playground jeers are the maturity level of edgelords, both right & left. They added -tard as a suffix, or used autistic instead, acoustic and other terms. And in the UK, the word "spastic" is the equivalent of r-word.
People are fucking belligerent about it too — they’re not just saying it enthusiastically and frequently but they’re gleefully shitty about it when you check them on using it
David, I know it's a tough spot and you're personally on the business end of it. I'm so goddamn sorry we all failed one another. We're on the ropes, but this is also an opportunity to build something better. As an Iowan, I will not let Tom Harkin's legacy be fed into the chipper. Fuck those guys.
I know most things about section 504 because of education; I did not have a 504 plan, but an IEP as a child until adulthood (I can ask for accommodations as an adult but I don't have a formal IEP anymore once I turned 18 and went to college). This is discrimination, plain and simple.
I hate that the world doesn't care about disability rights as much as the disabled. I do everything in my power to help the disabled and am only unable to mask because my mother is my caregiver and treats me as neurotic when I wear it, so the next best thing is staying inside to prevent covid
I'm severely autistic despite my verbal skills; because of the spread of my verbal and nonverbal skills, almost in a William syndrome like pattern to the point I've suspected a mosaic dual diagnosis of sorts, i cannot work most jobs even suggested for autistic or disabled people
Generic "helpful" job suggestions for autistic & disabled people are as annoying and unhelpful as health advice. Voc rehab people and disability denial people seem about equally clueless about where we can work and actually KEEP jobs that support us.
The repealing of section 504 will specifically affect those with behavioral disabilities, such as some manifestations of autism (particularly level 2 and 3 manifestations, both verbal and nonverbal), frontal lobe epilepsy or brain damage, forms of ocd like schizo obsessive disorder, and adhd
Look, I'm saying this as a parent to a special needs child. Without government intervention, it "goes back to the States." We saw how that worked out with abortion. There will be no one to protect our kids. And unless you have the money to hire someone to school them yourself, WE ARE FUCKED.
Over the last few months (or thereabouts? I’m not exactly sure), there has been a huge uptick in people publicly using the r-slur. Both to/about people with cognitive disabilities, & generally as a pejorative to express contempt. It’s getting renormalized. 🫠
/gen is a tone indicator, short for genuine, basically when someone is trying to express they are not trolling and sincerely want to know the answer and learn 💜
Yep. And the timeline of this upswing isn’t totally mysterious— MAGAs have obviously felt empowered to use slurs much more since the election. Elon & his clump of losers use the r-slur especially profusely.
But I’m not sure if, or how much, the increase was already starting even before November.
Autistic community is great that way. Constantly teaching and learning and innovating and hypothesizing. That's mostly what tone indicators came out of afaict.
Is this one of the reasons why people seem to be bringing up Tropic Thunder so much lately? Because of that one line? They can imagine themselves all cutesy and subversive because of it?

I mean, there was among well-meaning people, but Trump got into power on the backs of people who were never well-meaning.
But, your point is valid. Popular attitude and all.
They say they will save us with paper. We need bullets.

It's rare for non-disabled people to bother, or to know much about ableism.
Meanwhile, I've had strangers try to put me under a car when they saw my wheelchair.
