there's always a large aggressive response to bike lanes but goodness. In the fall piles of leaves take up half the road. Landscapers block the shoulder because people can't have their precious driveways showing off something thats not their fancy car. People honk at pedestrians for crossing roads.

one woman assured us that no study had ever found that bike lanes had a positive effect on traffic calming, she also kept asking questions about the "process" and it became very clear she was basically saying "at what point can I, as a rich person, stop this from happening"

Suburban New Jersey is pathetic for bicycle access. It's more dangerous than NYC, where I used to ride my bike daily. Those two streets are especially terrible. I used to live on Valley Street. It's a total shit-show, non-stop.

I was at a city meeting where a woman claimed that bike lanes and wearing helmets made cycling more dangerous because they caused a false sense of security, and that’s why the bike lanes should be removed.

Is this something where there's enough room on both sides of the street to just pave it a little wider and paint lines or do they have to move sidewalks/light poles/hydrants and stuff?

Because if it's the first, it should be the world's easiest decision.
