Great point from @normornstein.bsky.social: Elon Musk has attached himself to Trump like Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier handcuffed together in "The Defiant Ones."

It's hard to see how the brewing conflicts here don't end up splitting MAGA.

I'm thinking for example the "Röhm Putsch" 1934. Plenty of contemporaries deluded themselves into thinking that it showed the internal weakness of the regime and marked the beginning of its end. Communists in particularly were prone to this delusion. But the regime came out stronger than before.

I mean, the libs won and largely because of how incompetent and internally divided the fascist regimes were.

It's just that victory was purchased at a terrible cost. I'm not hugely worried about liberalism coming back into the fore. I'm worried about the catastrophes that get us back there.

Right. It got way worse before it got better (after a giant world war). And the US, post 1929, it was over 10 years before the New Deal reforms could fully address the crash.

Whatever form the next crash/crisis takes, I'm thinking the realignment pain will take as long/as much to fix.

The angle I find more interesting is Musk vs MAGA H1Bs. The anti immigrant wing is already wound up by Musk and Vivek being this close to Trump. And we all know Trump doesn't actually give a shit either way and could let it get too hot.
