This is what I was referring to with regards to the 3-2-5 structure.
A lot of teams will defend against that using a 5-4-1/5-2-3 shape with a CB jumping out to press one no.10.
This creates space in the oppositions back line, making it attractive to play early balls forwards.

Look at the situation here. If Rogers makes the pass then Watkins is in. If he doesn’t (which happens) Palace have Mateta free (as Carlos deep) & two + runners at Villa’s back line
Lack of control
I think we’re all hoping that it could work better with more suitable personnel eg.
-Kamara - Onana pívot
-Konsa CB instead of Carlos
-Tielemans in the Rogers role
-Rogers wide left
Thoughts?
I know you’re not big on him but IIRC you’ve said you think he’d be better in a more advanced role.
What’s the thinking there?
1. Ball retention high up the pitch. Actually get the ball through the lines pretty successfully, but then seem hurried, worried, or to run down blind alleys.
Not found the balance.
Was convinced in the summer Emery wanted a 2-3-5 shape. Not sure now.
But we’ve never really done that.
