in many ways, it feels like this paper mirrors @lsenderowicz.bsky.social & my journey through academia thus far- we were both on the job market, trying to make sense of our (disciplinary & intellectual) spaces. to have an ally, an intellectual partner through it was invaluable 2/12

this paper was a struggle- not because of its politics or its arguments, but because of who we wanted to speak with (demographers), & the bodies of critical, feminist literature we were drawing on in this conversation with them. these too are strange bedmates 3/12

I think we managed to do that in this paper: demonstrate how cooptation of language doesn’t translate to practice, how silence on race and coloniality will come back to bite us, that rights can’t flourish without justice; that feminism is praxis: not a buzzword 4/12

I’m proud of the arguments we put forward- that ceding political visions for expedience is dangerous; that compromise for short-term wins sets us up for failure, but I’m so proud of us for persevering; no matter how painful it was. We pushed back, we refused to cede ground on our arguments. 5/12

I won’t lie, I’m nervous about how some of my former colleagues/still friends will take it. We don’t hold back in our critique of some of the biggest SRHR organisations around the world & how complicit they are in discourses of family planning/population dynamics 7/12
