+100. I'm torn b/c I wouldn't sacrifice a moment of Izzy's story except his death, but it was a collection of baffling choices to give Izzy the intense scenes with Ed, the fun scenes with Stede, the full personal arc in place of Ed, and the self-realized speech to Ricky in place of Stede. 1/2

I remain convinced that the original plan had Ed and Stede dying in s3, then the s1 reception made DJ realize how poorly that would be received. So everything that was supposed to be satisfying about Ed and Stede's arcs and tragedies got transferred to Izzy because he was more disposable. 2/2

I just kinda figured that the last few episodes somehow speedran S2 and S3.

I also think they got Con and gave him lots of juicy parts, but it didn't make sense for the story with how they tried to end it.

Three things fuel my fringe theory: 1) Their RL counterparts died and DJ was initially cagey about whether the show would diverge from history, 2) Early on, DJ talked about wanting to subvert the longevity of the pirate myth and highlight how short their lives really were (hence the title), 1/3

Because I remember hearing that the tone was originally MUCH bleaker, and one of the ensemble crew would be killed off in every single episode. In a sort of darkly comic and unserious way. Glad they got to stay and develop instead! (tho not for long enough 😭💔)

Completely agree that the last eps speedran S3, and that Con was central to Izzy taking the stage. I'm just also convinced that s3 originally involved a big death, and that Izzy (while always slated to die) didn't originally have the theme-carrying death that Ed and/or Stede's was going to be. 3/3

In S1, I was *rooting* for Ed and Stede.

By the end of S2, I didn't even like them and I wanted Izzy to take the crew and fuck off and leave those two to their own devices in the murder shack.

Ed *was* my favorite character! For as upsetting as some of the shit they did with Izzy was, I don't think I'll ever not be furious at how Ed was written in S2. He was absolutely done the dirtiest (bc ultimately no character escaped being let down by the script).

They took their story & characters somewhere to get some cool, dramatic shots but did not attempt to actually handle those topics/themes* with respect. Which is why it's actively upsetting and not just disappointing.

they straight up gave izzy character development that Ed needed to have and then tried to transfer it over to Ed in the finale. and what you end up getting is izzy being more sympathetic and having a deeper dynamic with the crew and even stede.

Right? Like, Izzy could have become closer to the crew without all the shit they put him through. Jim and the rest could have developed sympathy for Izzy just by having Ed treat him like shit in front of them.
