I mean we're not going to be seeing combined-cycle engines in unclassified systems anytime soon, and we know the benefits those bring with them like electrical generation for DEWs still need refinement. So, I'm ecstatic that we have an option that exceeds the F135 core enhancement at present.

From what I understand before I retired from the AF a year ago, these new adaptive engines from Ge and PW have been ready for some time. They would even fit into the F-35. but the AF wouldn't pull the trigger to replace, instead upgrade the current F135 engine. Which is operating over its limits.

And yeah, the F135 will eventually have to be replaced even with the core upgrade. The thermal heatsoak is massive and a serious problem for fiber-mat stealth. Unless they find a way to make the 3d printed tunable ceramic RAM panels a standard sometime soon, which I doubt.

I mean shoot GE had a form of a variable engine in the YF-23, did they not? But the USAF deemed it too complicated despite its massive future potential? I think it was the YF-120 engine.
