You didn't address the problem. What players would the Pirates get with that $50-80m? Because if they covet Juan Soto and offer him $300m for 5 years, the Dodgers or Yankees would top it. Then they're back at square one for a RF but now the asking price has gone up. - ThreadSky

You’re sort of missing my point that teams can afford to spend significantly more to field a better team. If Soto is off the board, what stops the Pirates from going after Schwarber, Thomas, Hoskins, Diaz, Naylor, or Ozuna? Are you expecting the Yankees and Dodgers to outbid on all of them.

What stops the other 20 from doing the same? It's a bidding war. Some small market teams do themselves no favors by entering into those bidding wars for two reasons: 1. They show their hand to agents; 2. They inflate salaries. I am not saying it's good or bad, just that this is business.

Like I’m not disagreeing with you with how MLB deploys their business model—look at the disastrous Boras clients last offseason—it’s just a lot of greedy MLB owners horde that money and make no real effort to better their team

It's both of those things. It's greed/penny-pinching coupled with risk aversion. The Orioles' Chris Davis contract is the type of thing that keeps an owner up at night.

And that deal was his own fault. If he’d gone with Cruz (a Duquette signing) over Davis after ‘14, who knows where the O’s are in 2015, 2016 …?
