I have always said "open to" (as a BIPOC editor, and as one of two BIPOC editors of this particular mag) - meaning "the market is open" or "has opened"

"inviting" may be more "polite" or better "positioning" but I don't see "open to" as not valid or inaccurate

usually when someone says "this contest is now open to such-and-such submissions" it means it was previously closed but is now accepting submissions

i'm sure they didn't mean it that way of course but i think the phrasing was a lil unfortunate

we were previously closed (to me this is beside the point)

most magazines say "open to submissions" - it's fairly standard in the SFF magazine industry, whether brand new or reopening

which is not to say that the language cannot be improved; but currently this is common

both editors are queer - and most of the work we published under Christie and I were by queer authors (as a coincidence)

please check guidelines for the submissions windows and more details - BIPOC & general *definitely* doesn't mean "not LGBT"

This seems dope, I do have some questions. In the cover letter part do you want my real name or my pen name? Also I did get published a few times under a different name is it fine to just leave it out of the cover letter? Not trying to be disingenuous.

I recommend letting us know both pen name/real name - keep in mind first reads are anonymized so we won't see the cover letters initially

if we purchase a piece we'll need the info anyways to render payment & sign contract

I rec keeping covers brief - incl whatever pub history you like

Once upon a time a black college graduate applied for an engineering job at Tesla and got it. When Musk visited from corporate he didn't presume the man was unqualified or got the job because of some DEI quota. He was so impressed with the engineer he told him to take the rest of the day off. :-)
