I almost never read the long-form pieces like today’s Neil Gaiman exposé.
I just don’t buy into the notion that there are certain graphic details that make the abuse “worse” or “newsworthy.” If there was a power disparity and exploitation, that’s enough for me. Studies show it’s all traumatic.

I call it the Weinstein Effect. Each of these stories sets a higher bar for something to be “bad enough” to merit intervention.
There’s a real compulsion to respect perpetrators more when they violate victims in unique ways. Whether that comes out in lust or disgust, it’s two sides of the same coin.
