Omg. Once I kind of meekly told my ex something he did hurt my feelings and he got kind of explosive like “oh you’re right! I’m all bad!” And I ended up comforting him thinking he must be critical of himself because he had a bad life.
Not quite as bright red but parent going "I was destroyed by [adult child]" rather than saying "I was criticised very strongly by them about X,Y, & Z".
