ao3 is an archival website, not a social media platform. that's why it doesn't have things like a dislike button and an algorithm. i hope this helps ❤️

So many writers desperately trying to make it one tho, calculating their kudos:views ratios, comparing their numbers to other works.
Seeing others doing masochistic math is a weirdness of the Crazy Years that I was not prepared for.
I think this is just because AO3 has become the central place to post fanworks now and also just the shifting nature of fandom as a result of that. I personally try not to look at my stats too much because it is bad for me and it's so hard not to compare yourself to other authors.
I always respected the site bit I am only now considering making an account to put stuff there...I used to keep everything just within me and my friend group
Archive of Our Own: A fan-created, fan-run, nonprofit, noncommercial archive for transformative fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fan videos, and podfic
it's purpose is to store fanworks so that what has been made for fandoms and hosted on different sites are not lost when the original hosting site closes. which is why you often see in the "news" tab on the homepage that they are moving x fanworks from x fansite to ao3
Fanfiction is still great. My condolences that you're not getting the specific fics you want for your fandoms, but this is such an inflammatory statement that simply is not at all indicative of the medium as a whole.
The thing is I never was part of any fandom. I would go on Ao3 and read whatever; the world building was always on par to something you’d find at Barnes and nobles. Now, you genuinely have to be part of a fandom in order to enjoy the work. It could be that I’ve outgrown the medium of entertainment 🤷♂️
The thing is it wasn’t always like that. I got into watching Dr Who because of fan fiction; it wasn’t the show that brought me to the stories themself. Again, I may have have just outgrown the media itself.

I cannot win "writing fan fics" if I don't have this social media stuff
This mindset is a completely reasonable and not a ridiculous way to go about life at all. AT ALL! AT ALL!

My child, you read, and see if you like it. If you don't, there's a marvelous innovation called a back button. If you do, drop a kudos or a comment!
Repeat this process until you develop your own taste.
