Gotta wonder which end of the catch-22 is gonna resolve first. To lotsa folks, internet = social media = microblogging = A Platform.
I think as new AppViews keep popping up, the penny'll start dropping how much power people and communities have. Anything else maybjust look like another bsky feature
I've been writing a series of blog posts recently exploring the way I used to use the Internet before platformification, because it's not yet clear to me what people even _want_ from the web these days after two decades plus of consolidation.
I do feel your sentiment here, but we still need strong institutions on our side who'll enact & uphold the interests of users on a larger scale. ATproto may be a bit of a refuge from the tech oligarchy & 1 step forward, but it alone won't save us from wider systemic issues caused by corporate power.
This isn't to say we're completely helpless to the powers that be (I agree with how it's depressing many people have fallen into learned helplessness), but long-term change will inevitably need to go through politicians and other leaders, so it's good to have at least some on the side of users.
"We all saw the tech oligarchs lined up behind Donald Trump at the inauguration. Any plan that involves having any of them “saving” or “fixing” the internet is not going to lead to good results. It’s just going to lead to more power for the powerful, and less for the rest of us."
We have to do it!
This is all well and good, but Bluesky is not all that different, contrary to the claims made here. It is still a popularity contest where some voices are amplified over others. Yes, it is more polite and kinder than FB or Twitter, but that is not enough.
I see the same people over and over in Discover, whether I follow them or not. And have to use Following to see the people I follow, because they don't show up in Discover. No one sees my posts, even my followers. Millions of users but just a few get heard.
So why are you using discover then? There are like 100k feeds to choose from. Or you can make your own. Whole point is to stop whining and take control of your own experience
Why would I want to view a feed that has hundreds of posts all on the same topic? I have many interests and am looking for variety without bouncing from feed to feed. I find enough so I'm not bored but would like to at least see the people I follow which isn't even easy to do in following.
There are lots of feeds not just topic based. For example, if you're worried about missing posts from people who don't post often, why not try Quiet Posters, which shows you posts from people you follow who post infrequently:
Very specific, very useful. Thank you. 💙 Many of us didn't come here from Twitter, and Bluesky isn't intuitive and the "help" isn't very user friendly. I know I am not the only one who hasn't quite figured things out, based on comments on other posts. Is there a feed that helps with that?
I use both following and Discover. Some of the people I follow I only see in Discover. Do you think we all find using this intuitive? Bluesky doesn't make it easy. I follow through on any interesting post. Is this always your MO to attack any feedback? You come across as whiny and rude.
The billionaires and huge corporations with a quench for power and money are the problem with America! Nebraska got what they voted for and now it’s bankrupting them. I guess those illegals made our country great after all.
