Trans people, by virtue of crossing borders that have been widely assumed to be impermeable, expose certain absurdities about the way some things are. And as Sara Ahmed noted, "When you expose a problem, you pose a problem."

In this case the absurdity is that at some point, when data storage was at a much higher premium than it is today, some people made a decision to encode certain data in a number instead of storing it explicitly. And now it's a 'mare to get that data fixed if it's incorrect.

Fixing all this would require basically rebuilding the NHS' IT infrastructure from scratch and there's a reason clinical staff start crying and scromiting if you say the words "Big national IT project" to them. It's fucked, but what it isn't is trans people's fault.
