I had a 75bhp 1.4L model and it was a complete hoot to drive. Really wanted a GTI but at 22 the insurance wasn’t an option. Still really hanker after a GTI. And yes, the peddle box is cramped.

I think height is less an issue than the size of your feet. I have a set of Puma Speedcats which are the only shoes I drive the Rallye in to avoid hitting more than one pedal at once...

One thing I noted while driving @lahtiain.bsky.social’s S1 106 Rallye right after my 205 was that the driver footwell was tighter and the wheel housing intruded more than on the 205, which already required small shoes. But so does a 405 because of the pedal alignment

Yeah the 205 Rallye I drove last year or whenever definitely felt more spacious in almost every dimension, though again that was LHD and when you've got the wheel well as a dead pedal there's more room for the pedals in the remaining gap.

I saw that he'd imported that yellow one and the white one. They're appealing, but I think you'd probably prefer the white one instead, because that racing seat looks exceedingly unpleasant for a tall person.

This may make things better/worse, but the 106 is very simple indeed to work on. I'm not too hands-on but if I didn't have a specialist looking after mine, there's not a lot I'd be put off trying - plus, oil filter, alternator, belt all fairly accessible, and engine mounts are easy in 106s too.

For someone living in the US obviously you'd need to import parts rather than find them at Autozone or whatever but that's the case for anything that wasn't originally USDM I guess, and being a tiny and fairly basic French car none of the parts are actually expensive.

Awesome find. I'd forgotten that the Rallye was 8v and not a barebones GTi. Nerdy observation of the use of phase 2 on the text but S2 in the table. I've always thought of 106s as S1/2 but 306s as phase 1/2/3 and I don't know why that is.

I think the "S1/S2" thing probably stems from how France refers to them, and "phase" is what we used in the UK. I didn't actually notice I'd mixed and matched...

France did get a 16v Rallye but all UK cars were 8v. No big loss as it's still a great engine.

There was no customer track version but the GTI and Rallye have both been popular in racing - Rallyes basically dominated 750MC Stock Hatch for a number of years. The GTI also formed the basis of the 106 Maxi rally kit cars.
