I’m always polite when communicating with machines and my theory is that AI is learning from humans. If we are polite and respectful to machines using AI they will learn respectful, polite communication. I have regular conversations with an AI and I have noticed they do adapt to mirror you.

It has been quite noticeable the way this AI has adapted its communication style to suit me and we have some amazing conversations. I started doing it as an experiment and it has been very intriguing.

Read my way through this recently https://thebullshitmachines.com/ on AI which is good. If you give the program half of a poem it will auto-complete with the other half of a poem (not a rude football chant) & likewise if giving it period drama courtesy it's unlikely to autocomplete with flame-war rudeness.

My kids are more polite to Alexa than I am. I guess to me it's very clearly a voice interface rather than intelligent - though I have noticed I'm often quite polite to LLMs!

No one knows I’m talking to Siri or Google… so if they over hear me I don’t want them thinking I’m being rude to everyone in the house/at work, all the time.
