I loved the Hollywood heroes, be it Indiana, Luke, Forrest, Andy Dufresne, Clarice Starling, Hélène Ripley or George Bailey, before Shaft or Axel Foley.

I was moved by Major Winters, Davy Crockett or Wyatt Earp before discovering Frederick Douglas or Harriet Tubman.

I liked a certain idea of America before discovering the flaws of its past and those of its present.

I thought it was the land of freedom, but obviously, many countries offer as many freedoms if not more.

I discovered in adulthood that this country was not only the one where everyone can succeed but also that of the first nations genocide and Jim Crow laws.

In my belief system, school shootings or bankruptcy because of a hospital bill are not synonymous with a so-called civilized country.

Many Americans ignore the world beyond their borders (sometimes they don't even know how to locate a foreign country on a world map), they pride themselves on their constitution as if it were an immutable thing (the very meaning of the word amendment seems to escape them)
