Many years of nipping into the National Gallery to delight in this Angelico -- his heaven suggested by rows of goldsmith-style patterned haloes around holy heads. And look at that celestial ultramarine blue, ground from lapis lazuli stone, the precious pigment more costly than gold. Zero flash!

No! 🙂 "Z" in "ize" endings (with various exceptions) is British too, and actually preferred by the OED. Most Brits use "ise", but that's a 19th century affectation that comes from attempts to Frenchify British spelling. The US spelling is the more original one and Brit pedants like me still use it.

Nope. "Glitter" is from the Old Norse "glitra", via Middle German "glitzen". The archaic "glister" has the same meaning, but most linguists believe it comes from Old German "glisnōn" and has transmuted to "glisten" - not "glitter". Both of course come from the Proto-Indian "ghel-" root of shiny. A x

Very gentle push-back. The expression pre-dates Shakespeare by millenia. Aesop's golden goose -> Latin "non omne quod nitet aurum est" ("nitere" just means "shine") -> Chaucer's "hyt is not al golde that glareth". So, many versions exist simultaneously and I chose my version of the original Greek. 😘

We all have the bits of language we refuse to let evolve. Mine is “of that ilk” to mean anything beyond “of the same place name”. A barrister I used to work with insisted on writing “connexion”. It’s part of our identity - and a wonderful part at that. How many people still debate language?
