If they tax across the middle, it will be equivalent to cutting public services. It will affect all the local stuff - cinemas, restaurants, leisure etc; the govt is highly constrained but EU trade looks like the easiest valve. I don’t see how they can support Ukraine without it, given where we are.

To be honest they also need to ditch the fiscal rule “debt falling within 5yrs of forecast” it was brought in by tories to act as a break on public sector to the advantage of the private sector. There’s no good reason to keep it and this would allow flexibility with tax raises vs borrowing.
