Also, in general, even vet-med specific stuff is marked up less through a vet pharmacy (or a human one that also has vet meds like Walmart and Costco), so for maintenance or refills, always have it sent in and mailed to you.

As a vet I wrote many prescriptions for people to take to their own pharmacies. They could often get the same medicine for less than the clinic was paying wholesale. Don’t be shy about asking! (With the obvious warning here, ask your vet BEFORE giving your pet ANY human meds, some are dangerous).

My vet is very clear on which medicines are animal only versus human accessible thus pharmacy accessible. To be fair, I also spent so much at her office last year I think I paid for her kid's car, so she's willing to be frank with me about where I can save money.

Yeah, you're not supposed to give your animals anything that humans consume as far as most meds. I wouldn't do it. My dog doesn't even get human food.

Fielder was prone to aspirational pneumonia. Gabapentin was twice a day at 300mg. It's a human drug. It was PRETTY EXPENSIVE through his vet and ten bucks through Walmart thanks to the GoodRx app coupons.

Can confirm, our dog is on gabapentin and we get it with GoodRx also. I once had a LONG conversation about "doggy Valium" trying to explain that dogs just take human Valium and if you take a script to the pharmacy, they're not going to get confused "which" Valium to dispense. (I used to be a CPhT.)

We did this for antibiotics and a swath of other drugs. It's important your vet specifies on the script which TYPE of drug is pet safe, but most vets worth their salt will support you saving money.

Having just dropped $75 on gabapentin for a labrador and being pretty sure I paid nowhere near that when I was taking it myself, it occurs to me now that for humans it's on the PBS

Yeah we have socialised medicine, but it's for people

I need an MRI, it's free. Dog needs one, $5,000.
