I remember this image. I had it saved on my old hard drive for some reason. It spoke to me on how the world was at the time. The world is still like that now unfortunately. How something wonderful can be watered down and turned into a money grabbing activity. Depression and wonder all in one
I remember this really well, and it's a favorite for sure. I think about it a lot, especially since it seems like private venture has only seemed to make a grab at the public commons more than ever.
A very, very long time ago, I stood in one of the modules of the ISS before it was launched. NASA employee was a family friend; until it dawned on me how profoundly awful I am at math, I badly wanted to be an astronaut.
Loathe to realize non-profit space exploration will evaporate in my lifetime.
It used to be....a high school graduate could get a steady well paying job at a factory working 9am to 5pm with a one hour lunch break and make enough to afford a car, a home, food, and have enough left over for fun.
That one interaction I had with him alone is >100% of my motivation to boycot Amazon for life. The other transgressions help, sure, but that one guy vaguely associated with them being a pest in two spaces I enjoy pushed it from moral to personal.
Damn, this piece is like a gut punch. To us, it's an amazing representation of how excitement for space over time has been hijacked by corporations and indeed capitalism as a whole - the astronaut posing similarly to the usual photos of astronauts combined with the facial expression and logos works.
MAN, this piece really hits hard.... are you going to crosspost the explanation you had for this piece from twitter over to bluesky, by the way? Shame I missed it the first time, I can't see it over there
At first I was confused scrolling by, but the expression made me look again... then I saw all the logos, the flag, and the background... this is too real and it hurts. Wow.
Still a great piece, and it reminds you that space itself is limited by greedy people who want returns on investments now rather then advancing humanity to the stars, which is what we should be doing.

every time I see it, the more time has passed since then, the heavier it hits
genuinely just spent a few minutes, looking at it, hurting inside as someone who grew up wanting to see the stars
