Policy and scholarship position in-school suspensions as "less severe" than out-of-school suspensions, but are they? Drawing on 3 years of ethnographic research and 108 interviews, I show that kids don't think so. They compare in-school suspension to "jail" and "prison." Worryingly, adults do too!

When we talk about school discipline, I don't think it's enough to talk about whether it's "exclusionary." We should also talk about whether it's "detainment-based" -- reliant on the physical detention of the student on school grounds. This is easy to consider from both qual and quant perspectives!
