I think if you upload it as a video it can convert it to a video for you, which is not ideal, but better than still

And it doesn't warn you! The worst. It sits back and laughs while sipping its tea and watches you click POST. Even shows a working gif in the preview. Devious behavior.

it's so rough i uploaded the same .gif 4 times before i figured out that it was bluesky and not my file
