Irrespective of Commonwealth affiliation, I would support Canada above USA.
In 2016 I personally embargoed any personal purchases of all things 'Merican. Online purchases etc. just weren't happening for me with USA retailers & manufacturers.
Same now.
I don’t know how many Canadian products come here. Except for Maple Syrup I can’t think of any. Maybe someone needs to comprise a list so we can support all countries Trump is screwing with & boycott American products. We don’t need them. China is our biggest trading partner. Fuck American stuff.
Consumers can make a huge difference - just as consumers in Australia. have savaged the profits of supermarkets here that continue to gouge - just by shifting their spend elsewhere!
And food is a great place to start!
Do some research and make conscious decisions to change
Trump is enabling China. I have no idea why, but the net effect of all this will be China ahead across the globe after this Trump tantrum that he's alleging will fix America. It won't
The Chinese government know how to do soft diplomacy, they build roads and bridges, schools etc, trump's America doesn't do diplomacy at all, America is become an insular , petty minded country, flailing about at the whim of a toddler throwing a tantrum. This is what the people voted for.
Yes, I expect that a lot of old bullshit will be dragged out, "reds under the bed" stuff, and "national security" bullshit, from the RW in Australia, just as Morrison did, if Duttons gets to sit in the big chair. If that happens, we will go down with the sinking USA ship.
Has anyone heard a peep from our Prime Minister Albanese about supporting a commonwealth country?
Last I heard Penny Wong was in the US giving handies to Trumps admin and praising AUKUS.
My bet, Albanese will be picking over the corpse of the tariff war like a political vulture. #SupportCommonwealth
Any precious petals concerned about my referencing ‘handies’ & Wong in the same sentence , be assured if it had been Albo himself I’d have written the same thing… in the name of equality. FFS 🤦♂️

I dunno. The UK is pretty much cactus politically In Australia, apart from being spineless, we're mostly owned by America and our home grown oligarchs. Plenty of their sycophants here. #auspol
Please prove me wrong.
I need a lift, I think we all do.
As for any war between Canada & US I’d march in the street demanding we support Canada if it ever came to that. Trump better not invade them because I doubt any country in the world would support the US in such a conflict. Fuck Trump. And fuck any Australian politician who supports him.
Australia should. But at the moment we seem determined to suck up to Trump at every opportunity. But I think as part of being in the Commonwealth we’re supposed to support each other. But both major parties seem to support the idea that we’re Americas bitch.
Dog help us!
I don't think the "Commonwealth" thing means much these days. However I won't personally support any trump bullshit policies, I think that America is fucked, but they did it to themselves, just as Australia will be if Dutton gets into power.
Ahh Debbie….nuh, the consideration that the “ Commonwealth”means ANYTHING is a misbelief of a well and truly bygone era let alone that it’s”construct” would see us supporting Canada over U.S in a hostile action
The gravy train, for weak chinned aristocrats,to cruise the Dominions is almost no more
So you would buy American products over Canadian?
I’m American, but I’m embarrassed by our government, & I’m buying Canadian stuff for penitence!
Didn’t vote for trump, but still feel guilty for the worldwide chaos he creates!😔
This, preferred trade, is not the point of my reply to @debbienorthway.bsky.social
Debbie postulated that , in the event of conflict between Canada and America, we, Australia, would side with Canada BECAUSE we are both Members of the British Commonwealth
The concept of British C’wealth is a hangover from the demise of the Empire ,at the hands of “Sovereign movements” , in those Countries and accelerated by the rise of NeoCapitalism in the last half century or so
Thankfully”Empire” is no more
America, with their “King Cnut”,are reprising such demise
I understand the concept.
I was asking about your goodwill; do you want to help the US, or Canada. The fact that once our countries belonged under the same umbrella did not make us enemies, or do you think that it did?😳
I’ll support Canada over America any day. Half my family are Canadian. My partner is American but he is so furious with the idiots that voted Trump he wants to renounce his citizenship. He’s Australian now too. He says he’s done with America.
I have no ill-will to the citizens of either country,no aggressive sentiment to the governing structures of either
However, politically I “trust” the Governance of Canada , indeed believe its”political class”is more in tune with Aussie values than we are with Americas
Basically because most Australians just don’t give a fuck, hate Constitutional Change and,a few, still hunger for “recognition” for a Heritage predicated on a German Immigrants take over and rebadging as “The House of Windsor”
Also a mistaken belief that a GG (ergo the Crown) is politically neutral
Commonwealth... in this instance. How do we stop AUKUS? Why aren't we marching in the streets about this given what trump is doing? Do we wait for the first report of death camps? Or do something before he goes that far?
American businesses took full advantage of the tariffs China imposed on Australia, and the LNP , (in power at the time), did nothing but make the situation worse. We don't export eff all to America, China is our biggest trading partner, so US tariffs wouldn't mean much, a few less big utes maybe.
Where did this number come from? From what I can find, it's about $13 billion, which is far less than we import, so no, not our 3rd largest trading partner by a very long way.
Yep, less big stupid trucks, and more EVs, (China are now the biggest manufacturer of EVs in the world), this is a good thing, not too mention that China also manufactures a lot of solar panels and wind turbines. They are a smart people, and a pragmatic people.

Having The Commonwealth step up would be pretty cool.
They’ve already super-glued themselves to Trump
How’s that going to work out?

There’s no telling what Millionaire Dutton MP for Mega wealthy elites, billionaires and LNP will do if they’re elected
