The original idea was probably to make document writing easier so styles wouldn't be needed to set leading and be able to just get something that looks ok for academic papers.
how did it take 20+ years before someone realized how fonts work and decided to fix the web π
i found that the lineheight unit and subgrid can help in vertical rhythm and even make it adapt to different language modes, tried/seen this?!

the topography tab would let you (somewhat manually) dial in a typography with vertical rhythm
we cropped the images to fit the grid hehe
was before fonts, so I also made a thing that converted fonts to sprite sheets π
