Scrubbers create huge volumes of unnecessary pollution that could be entirely avoided by burning cleaner fuel. Dirty fuel use is *only* about padding the corporate bottom line.

Yes! We have submitted a scrubber wash ban to city hall. It would be implemented by revising the Terminal Tariff. We are emulating Seattle’s success with this plan. Wish us luck!

That’s a great idea!Tariffs are a solid approach. CLIA has an agreement between the cruise lines not to use dirty fuel while in Gastineau Channel at Juneau. They shouldn’t kick over a tariff discharge ban in lobster country.

We’re turning towards a cleaner fuel requirements. The cruise ships are already carrying 0.1% sulfur fuel onboard and should be using that, especially in State waters.

Absolutely! First our ports because we have clear jurisdiction. We will then tackle territorial waters because it will probably require state legislation.
How did you pass the requirement in Juneau? Is it a MOU? Because CLIA is trying to dismantle the scrubber ban in Puget Sound that is a MOU.

Great question! Actually, we don’t have ANYTHING in writing or enforceable. The CLIA lines don’t want the political heat of scrubber discharges here and it’s all company policy. Nothing enforceable and nothing on paper.
