Keep in mind that about 1% of the general population meets the clinical criteria for psychopathy. Several leaders and "thinkers" fit this description (extreme lack of empathy). We all know who they are. They should be officially diagnosed and declared unfit for office.

Listening to his "Dangerous Ideas" talk through the ABC Big Ideas podcast I was taken by how reasonable he sounded. The red flags were flapping for me but only barely. It can be easy to dismiss the crank(y) types but when someone is calm, articulate and rhetorically gifted, it becomes a LOT harder.

However, this level of acceptance of what is happening, and the likely consequences (pejoratively labelled doom / doomer) is a resilient path to focus our remaining time and energy on what is still possible.

I admire you hugely Julia, but that is 3 things. Having seen Jem in local discussions a few times, I don't agree on the 3rd, being a 'grifter'. That's about selfish motives, I think. I would look at his more recent writings to judge, but we've got more important stuff to tackle.
