The new Churchill
Will it be anything like the old one?
White supremacist and racist
Support eugenics
Order troops to fire on striking Welsh miners.
Allow millions of people to starve to death
Create the new Black and Tans
Sell out eastern Europe to a Russian/soviet leader
Not sure whether you know or not
But, the government at the end of a world war built more council housing than at any other time and started the NHS. I defy any government to achieve that today. 😎
This "we need a new Churchill" thing is already getting very old. We don't need mythologised figures from a different era. We need leaders (not one but many) who understand how the game is being changed in real time.
The Americans seem to have forgotten the lives lost, the life-changing injuries and indeed the financial costs that European NATO countries suffered over twenty years supporting the USA in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
As Brits what can we say? Disappointing might be lost in translation?
Well Farage may find himself in a proverbial buggar’s twist soon - he won’t support EU countries & UK efforts to stem his hero Putin. That won’t go down well with his claim to support our forces…
Appeasement didn't work with Hitler & it won't work with a Putin-Trump team.
"best known for his foreign policy of appeasement, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement on 30 September 1938, ceding the German-speaking Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany"
That's a lie spread by Labour at the time. Chamberlain knew Britain would get wiped out, so he delayed Hitler while spending 40% of GDP on building the military.
He knew Hitler would break his promise, but Britain was ready because of Chamberlain.
I feel it's possible that Churchill was most of the things his detractors say *and also* most of the things his admirers say.
But of course this is social media, where everything and everyone is either 100% right/good or 100% wrong/bad and nuance is impossible - so I'm not even going to bother fini
To give him his due, he was a useful wartime 'Dictator' (in the Roman republican sense) and figurehead.* Other than that, yes, he WAS most of the things his detractors say.
[*I have a collection of WW2 cartoons, and I can see where he lent himself to this.]
She, with Schroder, oversaw Germany committing to blind energy dependency on Russia by signing up to NordStream pipelines which detoured around, massively weakening, Ukraine & strengthening Putin. In her defence... she was probably stupidly naive. Schroder was an outright traitor.
I'm more interested in Policy than People. But someone who is neither stupidly naive nor a traitor would help. I enjoyed the Merkel persona but a review of her impact is poor. We must veer away from neoliberalism & populism, & apply real social policies in a strong Europe with a federal army.
I see a Trump mouthpiece has trashed a European heads security meeting in Paris after telling us to do more? Sadly symptomatic of the chaos Trump & his pal Putin want to create. Now time we looked after our continent, frankly while Trump is in power we must step back from our “special relationship!”
A Trumpian blood stained carpet has been laid thread bare across the Continent to welcome Putin's wanton aggression. Now Europe must band as one to block this carriageway of evil.
If we fail to act upon the lessons learned from the events of 1938/39 we will find ourselves crushed by autocratic power over which we have no control.
Strange that only Ukraine and France seem to have a clear and stated strategy for Europe. There is a limit to how long the others can be content with "watching the situation closely" as a strategy against Putin who is now also getting moral support from Trump
I hope you find one. The US is no longer a democracy. Someone has to step up now to assume the Most Powerful Man in The World mantel so that it is no longer the American president by default. DO IT NOW!
Churchill was a racist and imperialist. This is the kind of politics that capitulates to "strongmen"(sic) politics on the Right. A well organised Left across Europe is the only answer.
There are no democracies. Isn't it obvious? There is the illusion of democracy, with voting (bt all parties are bought) & press freedom (bt all printed/broadcast/social media are bought) & freedom of speech (bt you get jailed for trying to save the planet from the kleptocrats)
We need real democracy
“Churchill” is historical shorthand. An ambitious politician, he would have got nowhere with a Party that was all for appeasement without the entire Labour movement and powerful unions telling him that fascism had to be fought. Organised labour was the bolster that allowed a wartime coalition to win
Don’t forget he committed a genocide or famine as we brits like to call them and he was happy to turn guns on his own populace at least twice. I’m sure we can find someone with bollocks to do what needs to be done without the baggage of someone like him.

Austerity is the path to extremism and he knew it

We already have a Churchill, he's called Farage
"best known for his foreign policy of appeasement, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement on 30 September 1938, ceding the German-speaking Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany"

He saved Britain.

AKA the Status Quo
Greta Thinberg warned about "stability".
I'll discuss it with my German DIL arriving tonight.
