She's supposed to fill the role of being a bimbo that's forced to raise her niece. By the way, do we know the backstory of how she ended up having Nancy under her wing?

NGL it'd be kinda funny. But all the same, right after WW2 a lot of kids were left without parents or separated, so Nancy's and Sluggo's predicaments don't feel too far from the realities of that era.
From Wikipedia: Aside from creating Nancy as Fritzi's niece, Bushmiller claimed to know nothing about her lineage, adding 'Very occasionally, I get curious kids asking me, but I don't know what to tell them.'
Ah, I see. Yeah, it kind of makes sense. Not everything has to have a deep lore. Also, curious kids are also fun to tease. I am a curious kid and I am pretty intrigued. LOL.
This account had been posted about this. In the 1930s plots have arcs, in one arc Fritzi have a boyfriend and Nancy believes that since she is an orphan, the boyfriend may send her to an orphanage. Either it is just a plot twist for the moment or Ernie decided to discard this later.
Her being an orphan is logical. The question is, how is she related to Fritzi? That is never revealed, and Bushmiller says he doesn't know her lineage either.
In the Fritzi Ritz cartoons, sometimes Fritzi has nephews visit. Her parents appear to be quite wealthy.
Well Ritz is a slang word for Opulence, class and display of richness. So it kinds of makes sense. But at the same time they aren't as rich as Rollo or Jethro. They look upper-middle class though.
In one 1930s plot, a man starts to send them loads of money. They look up the origin of the couriers to some toy maker which copied Nancy look for a line of toys. He did it without permission or course, so they arranged to pay royalties. Now they arent money bags but they have enough money for this.
I like to imagine nefarious and infamous origins for Nancy and Sluggo. Where are her parents? Nancy and Sluggo know… but will never tell. They have Sluggo just “appear” out of nowhere one day and he’s taken in. He’s often depicted living in a flop house and sometimes there is mention of an uncle.
I'm feeling bad for Sluggo. No wonder why this kid is street-smart. Well, when he's not getting into trouble, that is. As for their origins, since the creator never had any explanation himself due to Nancy being a comic strip, it's up to our imaginations.
I'm sure it has. But, it's a serial comic. Plot like that is not normally important and has probably only been explained from the start or only once for a gag.
