Attendance policy - attendance is THE best predictor of course grades and GPA. But students don't like mandatory attendance policies. Possible solution - optional mandatory attendance. 3/

Opt-in to policy where grade will be reduced by 1% for each class missed after two grace misses. 3% extra credit for choosing mandatory. Other options in slide. 4/

Faculty think 20% of students will opt-in, other students thought 40% would opt-in, in reality 80-95% of students in course opt-in. They're also more motivated, think they learned more, much higher evaluations of course. 5/

In a small test, higher attendance with optional mandatory than typical mandatory attendance. Beginning of semester everyone attends, as it goes on mandatory attendance decreases while optional mandatory stays constant. Student testimonials in slide. 6/

Assessment choices - easy and hard assignments. Either only can do hard assignments (don't know easy exists), or asked to commit early (68% chose hard), free to switch (90% choose hard and 85% stick with hard whole semester). 7/
