I find this attitude frankly sociopathic. Yes, in an ideal world, people who aren't fit to be parents wouldn't be. But in our world, these kids ALREADY EXIST, and shouldn't have their life chances flushed down the toilet because of sheer bad luck. They can't choose their parents. - ThreadSky

If the state withdraws support, these parents don't suddenly pull their socks up and fill the gap. They just keep neglecting their kids, who then suffer needlessly and, in many cases, for the rest of their lives. That then has its own impact on the rest of society. We all lose.

Fair point but what isn't is expecting teachers to pick up the slack. If the parents can't do their jobs properly then their kids should be taken off them - though obviously at the moment that's a big resourcing problem which is another issue.
