I fundamentally disagree with the core premise of this paper. Generative AI is an evil technology and we should be fighting against its broader adoption in the earth sciences. If generative AI becomes more widespread, climate change will get much worse, and we won't have a liveable earth to science.

You're misconstruing the "core premise" of the paper.

We don't even talk about generative AI, it's mostly about classic machine learning honestly. But as always, you can't get a paper published if you don't use modern buzzwords.

(And it's confusing if you talk about ML but use XAI etc.)

I appreciate your response though. You're just barking up the wrong tree. I agree that generative AI in science is dangerous at best and this paper does not say anything to the contrary.

I will admit to being on a hair-trigger for any mention of AI in anything even vaguely related to either of my scientific fields lately. Those damned computers are literally coming to steal what passes for my job.

I totally hear that. Sorry, it's been threatening your livelihood. That really sucks. They're liberally stealing everything I've written in the past 15 years as well. Not super happy with it. 😅
