I just think to deny he was part of the IRA and being CO of the Belfast brigade was distancing himself from decisions he made which others sacrificed for was very poor. I understand why the dark and others felt betrayed.
IRA was a 'secret army' Gerry has never been convicted of membership. If he was to say he was a member he could be convicted, why would anyone say something like that and go against the green book if they even were a member.
Any member who openly states a person without a conviction was a member - goes against the green book and therefore is a tout. Gerry has openly stated that he will never distance himself from the IRA, take that how you will, I know how I take it.
