I was in Brazil in 1982 and got my first look at extreme income disparity. Not long after, I went to buy an outdoor faucet at the hardware store, which no longer exists, and one made by a customer was priced around $3 and a replica next to it was 52 cents. I knew then it was over.

Society compensated with more family members working, cars were leased, equity was pulled out of homes. Cheap imports steadily closed the factories that created wealth.

Then came the roll-ups. Prosperous family businesses, the ones who sponsored Little League teams and bought ads in high school yearbooks, were bought up and made into national organizations. Lower paid employees replaced owners who patronized restaurants and bought cars every 2 years.

Funeral homes are a casebook study. There are very few independents left. The old name may still be on the door, but the local outlet is part of some bond package sold with a very predictable return on investment. Meanwhile, more local wealth has been skimmed out of communities.
