I really wish more High Fantasy authors would focus on making great standalone books rather than trilogies or building a hexalogy. A lot of times the magic can get lost halfway through the second book.

I appreciate the sentiment. It's purely the market and how books sell these days. You write one book and it's nothing. You write two books and you have the first book sell the second, then the second, and the third...
I've had clients try to escape the algorithm, but it pulls them back in.
And I understand the need from a financial standpoint. But I’ve encountered books that should have ended on the first one, and when I start reading the second I either have to push through it or shelve it with absolutely no interest in getting the 3rd. Epic worldbuilding is possible w just one book.
Neat. Always open to recommendations. I've got it jotted down. He has so many books I feel I must have read some stuff by him sometime, but that one has passed me by.
