This is nice. Those snarling synths in the background are a great counterpoint to the lush synth and plucked sounds you have going on. It feels a touch threatening which gives the whole thing a sense of narrative. I wasn't expecting that space rock section at ~2:00. Keep it up!

It's rare that 4 part voice writing in minor keys doesn't prod in extremely emotional places and this is no exception! The processing of the voices is quite nice. It removes the synthetic quality that a lot of vsts impart on specific words and makes them more into synth. Beautiful. 🙏🙏🙏

As it happens, no human voices or VSTs were used in the production of this song. The main chord sound is the flute preset from a Casio SK-1, resynthesized in a Tasty Chips GR-1. I think they're just three rather than four-note chords, too.

Thanks! After I finished it, it reminded me of attending my uncle's funeral, so it's named after him. Spent ages texting friends with actual knowledge of music theory, trying to get the chord sequence right. But the secret sauce if probably the Tasty Chips GR-1, which is the main synth here.

The banjo on this is really nice. It takes what could be a typical rock song and makes it really stand out. I don't know how you got it to sound like such a cross between banjo and guitar on that melodic riff (you know the one). Did you double it in guitar or is it just how it's mixed?

not to undermine the serious subject matter of the song, but wow...such an EPIC intro! A lot of thought went into this arrangement and it shows. It has a very 'classic' quality to it and seems very informed by 70's production. The sparse vocal harmonies at ~3:30 are also really effective.

The lofi aspect of this track works well for you here. Kind of like a picture taken with a holga or diana camera, the lower fidelity gives it a dreamy sheen which works as a nice counterpoint to the emotional place the track comes from. Yeah. A couple months ago. I had to let go of the studio space for a variety of reasons and just didn’t have a place to keep the machine. Moving towards having a small mix/overdub room and tracking in other spaces, and tape machine doesn’t work in that scenario.

That intro pulse is interesting. Is that a synth vocoded with percussion?
The rhythmic drop at 2:22 paid off really nicely in this, and I LOVE the cheeky preemptive triplet right before you move into the shuffle at ~2:50. Felt kind of like a conductor prepping an ensemble for the modulation.

Thanks! Not much going on effect-wise for the guitars. There's an outboard spring reverb tank that's doing the heavy lifting (important in vintage-y stuff to impart the spring before you hit the amp). Other than that there's just tube amp and I think a touch of tremolo in one guitar part.

Thank you so much! No guitar in this, I don't even own an ebow. :P I tinkered around with a rhodes-like preset one day, which became the starting point. After that, it was just a matter of choosing textures and layer them around the rhodes, much like a sculptor would add layers to a skeleton.

Nice guitar tones on this! Drowning the vocals in reverb was also a good choice. It could have swung cheezy early 90's love ballad really easily, but the super wet vocals (with that lovely ghostly bg vocal) and hypnotic lyrics make this feel fresh - like more of a commentary on love tropes. Great!

LOTS of work in this track. I gathered data on the nearest stars to our Sun (mass, spectrum, classification etc.) and made a stereo trip around the stars as if they were each "singing" a unique melody. Even the timbres are based on the star spectra.

This is nice. Simple, to the point. It's everything it needs to be. The slowly creeping organ is an effective way of building to that final chorus. I really like the subtle crunch you get when the recording gets hot. Is that due to the preamp? It adds a lot of character.

thanks! it was a few years ago, but iirc the flute was recorded using an AT2020 (large diaphragm condenser) pointing downward positioned above the flute player

Nice guitar playing! Your singing is also on point. I wish my voice sounded 1/3 as nice. This song is deceptive, though. If I don't pay attention to the words it feels like a song about lovers working through a rough patch but holy heck, this is NOT a song about that. Well...it kind of is but 😳😳😳

Thanks! The song is about the "Fox Lake Massacre", a mob killing in 1930. Three men were killed, all mobsters connected to Capone, and George Druggan (brother of gang leader Terry Druggan) and Vivian McGuiness (lawyer's wife he was fooling around with) were hit and survived and later married.
