Was discussing the other day how some label compilations and samplers feel as important as some artist albums. Especially with electronic music. It is strange how the compilation doesn't really feel like a thing anymore

I'm wondering whether being able to browse and preview artists' and labels' entire back catalogues obviates the most common case for a compilation.

A compilation of new songs is a different beast, but still I find it jarring to listen to now. I guess it's the same reason I don't do playlists.

I lost interest a bit with the very uncurated mega-compilations. 150 random tracks for a fiver kind of thing.

But a well curated, well sequenced compilation is a wonderful thing.'

My first commercial release was on Toytronic's Neurokinetic compilation and I still go back to that as a record often.

Yes, there are some classic, well-curated compilations (& soundtracks) that sit in important places in the development of my tastes.

Maybe I have gotten so jaded from the unfiltered mega-compilations and thrown-together samplers that I miss some well-curated comps.

I really struggle with the infinite choice of online stuff, I always just tend to head back to my faves. Curated samplers and playlists really help me broaden my scope a bit!

yeah I think it's an effect of there being so much more music now... either the thing you want is more specific, and compilations no longer zoom in so narrowly on a scene - or it's a benefit comp with 150 tracks and you'll never get through it

(side note: make it a SERIES of benefit comps y'all!)

I listen to more full artist albums than compilations but there’s always a bunch of decent compilations (mainly for charity) that keep me interested.
