I have often thought the fascist takeover in those books, and especially how people like Umbridge played a role, was insightful (ironic given JKR now). The rich and the racist and the criminals were into it. They took over the govt and school and newspaper. They weren’t masterminds, just cruel.

one of the few highlights from the movies I saw was that Umbridge's actor nailed how cruel, vindictive and petty the kinds of people she represents are

also the part where people like her were put in charge of departments at the Ministry of Magic that they specifically wanted to sabotage was pretty on the nose

It boils down to people keep saying that Umbridge is the most evil person in the series, when we have magical Hitler, and how a lot of the exceptionalism boils down to how ugly she's mentioned to be. But also ugly in a masculine girlie way.+
