The soil carbon market is going to collapse - and that's a good thing.
One of the issues I explore in this week's column, about the dreamworld of climate fakery our legislators have created.

Soil health underpins life, and soils have been degrading for a long time. Credibility and measurement challenges are real, but carbon markets could still fund large-scale restoration.
Flawed markets don’t mean flawed solutions!
1:You come up with a scheme to sequester carbon
2: *you* come up with a way to measure the amt of carbon sequestered
3: you get a third party, using *your* method, to verify it
1/7
don't let Amazon etc buy good PR from you
the futures market is just as dumb as it sounds. say I have a 25 year project, and a landowner. I measure every 5 yrs, 3rd party measures, and you get a big pulse 2/7
You project what you *think* the yield will be in the whole 25 year project, and then the futures org pays out annually, while taking a cut. then they get all the $ every 5 yrs. if the calculation is off 3/7
Literally every step in this process is powered by VCs and Hedge Funds. 4/7
But the latest literature says we need to capture and store carbon for like a thousand years in order to have an actual climate impact. that describes few if any of the carbon credits on the market. 5/7

Minor quibble, soil C:N ratios are not fixed at 12. Under forests can be 20, 30, 40. Also N not always needed to balance C. The C:N ratio can widen under different management practices.
