But yes I agree that the we need to cooperate with other nations to make this work.

It’s the same for a wealth tax, nations need to work together otherwise the rich just move their assets (and sell what they can’t move).

We could tax UK citizens on their total earnings globally, regardless of where they reside, *but* we'd be in breach of a lot of international agreements that we have signed that relate to double taxation.

To put it into perspective, we have double tax agreements with over 100 countries.

The ultra rich know this, and so if they and their investments move to Monaco, the UK government gets nothing.

Given that 30% of the tax take comes from the top 1% of earners (per OBR - https://articles.obr.uk/income-tax-and-the-earnings-distribution/index.html#:~:text=Around%2060%20per%20cent%20of,shifts%20in%20the%20tax%20take.), that could badly harm the public sector.
