I just repurchased the Sims 2 and still had my original installation and all the mods from 2009.

Picked up the directory, dropped it in, worked like a charm.

Also discovered at some point I accidentally downloaded the Russian theme song to Freakazoid in my old mods folder! Still there...

Unfortunately disc rot is essentially a given but happening less than 20 years out on mass-manufactured discs even if kept in pristine shape, is I believe an anomaly.

If discs are manufactured properly they should be able to last over 50 years and probably significantly longer. I have some of the first CDs released in the 1980s that still work perfectly. I have LaserDiscs from the late 1970s that have some of the typical issues but no sign of rot.

Yeah, apparently this was due to a certain place they used during that time to manufacture the discs, but it’s true. I tested all the discs I owned from that list and about 75% of them were unwatchable. Don’t know if the other ones that worked are doomed too or if I just got lucky.

- Originally released between 2006 and 2008
- Mould code: IFPI 2U** (right above the spindle hole on the data side)

Shades of when laserdiscs made in a specific pressing plant in Terre Haute, IN failed because of an issues with the glue used. You could see your discs bronze.

Yeah, those are the ones! The bummer is this was the era when WB was putting out a lot of their classic titles in nice editions. Many of the deeper cut titles aren’t streaming and haven’t gotten subsequent Archive Collection editions or Blu Ray releases and I doubt they ever will.

I do think DVDs have a shelf life, but I don't think it's supposed to be quite that short! Someone commented that DVDs properly kept, per Sony, supposed to last 30-100 years. (I once borrowed a well-used DVD from the library that felt like it would liquify in my hands and it still played just fine.)
