But who sells filters for the Melitta coffee machine? Not big Sainsbury's, not Tesco Metro... The local night shop. AND fancy Kentish Apple juice as well 🤔
Theres something to be said for the sheer variety of stuff the smaller shops sell.
I didn't go into one for a couple of years for work/area reasons and when I did I was gobsmacked to see things I'd not seen on a supermarket shelf for decades.
Ha! I lived around the corner from Denmark Hill Food and Wine in Crawford Road in the late 1970s early 1980s but I don't think that store had opened then. I may be wrong
Stores like that have mushroomed in the last 30 years and particularly in the last 10 years where I now live in Southport
We source things there that it can be difficult to get in supermarkets and especially when you want to get your hands on it before buying which you can't do easily on the internet
I think 20 years ago they were known for being cheap (classed with Costcutter, Poundsaver etc), whereas they're actually more expensive than supermarkets but convenient and more stocked with non-perishables (and E numbers)
I loved this article as the proud daughter of a Bosswoman. It really is a high-trust industry - that's why they always stock the pre-priced happy shopper style ranges, to show that the pricing is honest.And always have one of everything on hand,you never know who will show up at midnight needing it!
