This was the desired end-state of the 1980s and 90s through use of copyright law and cultural engineering, to reduce people to docile consumers and compliant labor. However the internet disrupted their plans in a big way. In the 2010s they captured the internet and resumed their mission.

However, in that time there was a quality shift where consumption became increasingly less relevant. In that time, the nature of capitalism shifted to various forms of rent (i.e. copyright royalties and shareholder dividends), leading to shareholderism and IP based capital.

Thus the goal was for people to be reduced simply to labor since their consumption was increasingly less desired. However, the pressures of the pandemic and the unexpectedly blunt force push of Trumpism lead to increased union consciousness (2023 was "the year of the strike").

With neither AI or immigration being viable anymore, Capital is in a panic since it has no idea what to do with its domestic working class. Deepseek popped the AI bubble and embracing the far right meant immigration couldn't be considered.
