Absolutely, they tried to overthrow an election they lost. Now they’re in, they’ll try everything they can to stay there. One senator is already trying to change things
I'm hoping that when he dies (soon, please?) his cult of personality will die with him.
My fear is that Musk, Thiel and the rest find someone else with the same appeal to the masses (and maybe more compliance to them) that they can replace him with...
We need to use this as a lesson to change party funding in the UK before it is too late. Ban dual national and foreign funding and perhaps consider only MPs with one passport for election. Corporate funding should be capped as should union funding to keep it fair.
You’ll get no disagreement from me on any of that. I’d go further and ban all donations and introduce state funding. No donations, no beneficial lobbying (either directly or indirectly) with a 20 year window.
Jail time for any miscreants that try to get around it.
The problem I see with total state funding would be all the real extreme nutty groups getting a free pot of credit to spout their nonsense. It is a real fine line.
If a group of nutty extremists got together a party, and fielded enough candidates, I’d state fund them - I’m sure we can come up with a sensible tiered model that would work better than what we have now.
Trump will want a dynasty that will rival the bushes or the Kennedy's. If they can't get Trump a third term (expect the question to start being asked by RW media in the next 18 months) Donald Trump Jr will be next.
Sure. But will he appeal to the r/w electorate in the way that Trump senior does? I'm not so sure. I can't imagine anyone else saying the crazy nonsense that he does and being believed by the electorate, which hopefully levels the playing field, especially if this term doesn't deliver for them.
I agree, he probably won't have the same appeal, but it's a continuation of the MAGA ideals and movement. And what's to say the levers of democracy haven't been so corrupted in 4 years, there's even an electorate. I don't there's anything off the table at the moment, and that's terrifying.
Vance doesn't have cult status, nor is there another obvious personality. He would coast briefly after Trump's demise and then disappear. With the MAGA beast decapitated it will break into factions and start in-fighting - a spent force. The question is what will rise in the new political desert.
That presumes that people are as afraid to confront Vance as they are to confront Trump, and also a sense that Trump actually did make things better for people, which could be a stretch. Trump's demise could well embolden the opposition.
It’s a good point. There are clearly loads of nefarious characters who share Trumps goals and outlook, but no-one obvious who has the same hold over white America. I don’t think it will die with him but won’t have the same impact once he’s gone
It's surprising how many people seem to think it's still business as usual over there. Just the other crowd in for four years. It's over. It's no longer a Democracy. This is all just the start.
