A perhaps more interesting question would be: Which (if any!) Bond movies would you call Actually Good, if they had to stand alone, unmoored from the franchise?

Goldfinger? Casino Royale? License to Kill, maybe? I love Skyfall, but it's Bond about Bond.

I'd say Dr No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger all stand on their own merits. Otherwise Casino Royale is a functional reboot and one of the strongest in the franchise. Everything else feels kind of dependent on the franchise.

Yeah, I think that's fair. I'd forgotten about Dr No there ad it does stand alone. From Russia with Love probably the same - I guess the context is more the cold war than the franchise.
