Exactly this. Maybe ridden our luck. Maybe thought we had done enough. Just 1 (or 2) more points across so many of those games we lost or drew was all it needed. But we ultimately deserved it for that middle third of the season.

Completely agree. The club just assumed it’d get out of the mess it found itself in. By the time it realised we had to sort things out, we were too far gone.

If most of the last decade saw us do nearly everything right, this year was the opposite.

We were undercooked coming into the season. We didn’t break the careless habits that cost us in the Premier League. We didn’t truly attempt to course correct until it was too late.

And unforgivably, we’ve contrived to turn the windfall of Premier League football into a burden by saddling ourselves with a squad of players not worth the hefty wage bill we’ll be paying in League One next year.

This summer will be crucial for us. Bloomfield has done enough to suggest he can do a decent job for us. Alli, Asgaard and Makosso showed enough of their quality. Relegation provides an excuse for a hard reset on and off the pitch.

It’s been a disastrous season, undoubtedly, but in MB and a core of young players we hopefully have the basis for the next generation.

Getting shot of the expensive deadweight (Mengi, Chong, Brown, Marv) will be crucial though.

I think it needs to be the right players more than the number. Very much in the heat of the moment but I wouldn’t shed any tears if we offloaded Mengi, Chong, Hashi, Baptiste, Brown, Marv and Holmes.

Morris and Eli deserve a proper pre season and to be judged next season.

But we will only bounce back if we have a fresh vision for the club that reasserts the values that had made us a genuinely model club.

And after the dirge this season, I can’t confidently say that we will see that happen.
