As I'm in the middle of building up a 'new' fixed gear (from the parts bin), gear ratios have been on my mind. Zach Gallardo has switched often in the last few years between spinning & mashing. Recently he made a return to a 'standard' ratio. Let's crunch some numbers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkSc5ODRXWw

Switching to 48/17 would net +1mph at the same cadence with 35s, or +.6mph with 25s which is the planned size to run
I'm building up a road bike to be zippier with friends
Yeah, my primary is 39/53 x 14-34 2x and it is... a bit too tall for living halfway up a 6% grade, awesome on the flats but we don't live in the flood plane anymore.
That said those white industries hubs with the built in splines is great too, but like Zack said.... Money
(Also lol if Sugino goes open standard on their spline design for fixture and it ends up really catching on that'd be top)
The cogs are frozen on so I only have 16t or 20t as options. My other fixed crank has a 46t chainring. That means either 62 or 79 in
'Standard' gearing is abt 48x17, usually w/ skinnier tires. At 700cx32 that's 76 gear inches
In the end I'm going to start with 42x16 (700cx32) at 71 gear inches and report back. How does a fendered and dynamo'd fixed gear ride? I'm excited to find out!
